David Jones

I was born in 1948, in Palo Alto, California, home of Stanford University, the Whole Earth Catalog, birthplace of Silicon Valley, the Grateful Dead, psychodrama, the Merry Pranksters and Joan Baez. Having grown up in this cultural hot spot continues to be a major influence in my life!
My family has always been very artistic, as well as scientifically inclined. My father was an aerodynamicist whose hobby was making violins, and my mother was a mathematician, passionately in love with opera and classical music. My two sisters are both classical musicians, one a violinist, the other a pianist. I play saxophone.
All my life I have had equal passions for jazz and abstract art.
I've been drawing and painting since I was 12, when I first saw a painting by Jasper Johns. I love abstract art because when it?s good it can put the viewer in touch with who they are beyond their culture, psychology, history or personality.
I've been greatly influenced by Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Cy Twombly and Richard Gayton, my drawing teacher at The California College of Arts and Crafts.
I use only archival quality materials in all my work, which I guarantee against defects. I paint with acrylics and oils, mostly on braced Masonite and stretched canvas. My works on paper are on 140 lb. Arches Hot Pressed Water Color Paper.
I have taught drawing, painting and color theory for young and old, both in my studio and in more public venues. I have also taught public schoolteachers how to teach their students art, and am on the Mississippi Artist Roster of approved artists for grant seeking institutions. I am currently teaching youth at risk for the Core Arts Initiative of the Greenville Arts Council.
I live and play in Greenville, Mississippi (The Heart And Soul of The Delta!) with my wife Liz (an Episcopal priest), my daughter Sarah and three hoodlum cats.
